Carabao Island, Philippines: 8 Facts for the First Time Visitor
1. Carabao Island where the municipality of San Jose is located.
Separated from the rest of Tablas Island, the municipality of San Jose and its five barangays (Busay, Combot, Lanas, Pinamihagan, and Poblacion) are located on Carabao Island, Romblon. The 2020 census revealed an estimate of 11,750 residents.
2. Its local name was changed when the Spaniards arrived.
Although travelers call it Carabao Island, to some residents, it is Hambil. During the Spanish colonial period, explorer Miguel de Loarca named it Isla de Carabao due to its shape, which appeared like the back of a carabao.
3. Carabao Island is a laid-back alternative to Boracay.
You might have already guessed it, but the atmosphere on Carabao Island, Romblon is completely different from its neighbor. In fact, visitor testimonials often claim that it is reminiscent of the old Boracay: simple, quiet, and uncrowded. It shares similarities like pristine white sands, pebbled shorelines on other parts of the island, and crystal clear, turquoise waters; yet seems so otherworldly at the same time.
4. It is home to the Philippines’ largest telescope.
Watch the stars at the epic Carabao Island Observatory, located in Sitio Sinungan, Barangay Lanas. While the observatory appears simple on the outside, it is actually the perfect place to stargaze and reflect. Because Carabao Island is remote, quiet, and free from light pollution, astronomer Kelvin Martinez established this cozy educational hub to promote studies, observations, and general interest in stars and heavenly bodies. The observatory and think tank boasts a fully computerized 20-inch telescope, which can register live images in 4K, such as planets, stars, and galaxies.
Carabao Island Observatory is open to visitors, researchers, and curious minds who are fascinated by astronomy. Advanced reservations and inquiries are highly encouraged.
5. Public beaches and private resorts are accessible on the island.
The two most popular places to go swimming or snorkeling are Lanas Beach and Said Beach. The former is on the west side of the island, and boasts a long, incredible strip of fine white sand. Finding a hotel or resort in Lanas Beach is easy, as nearly all of them are located within walking distance of each other.
